The Recopa Sudamericana is a Super Cup competition featuring the Copa Libertadores champions against the Copa Sudamericana champions.

The Copa Libertadores is the CONMEBOL equivalent of the Champions League, featuring the best South American club teams facing off in a group stage and knockout tournament. Meanwhile, the Copa Sudamericana is similar to European football’s Europa League, with second-tier clubs competing for the trophy.

Before the start of the following season, the winners of the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana from the previous season play a head-to-head game for bragging rights across the continent of South America before a new season for the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana gets underway.

History of the Recopa Sudamericana

The Recopa Sudamericana has its origins in the Recopa Sudamericana de Clubes tournament, which ran between 1970 and 1971. It featured South American soccer teams that had won their domestic cups as well as teams that hadn’t qualified for the Copa Libertadores.

Unfortunately, the Recopa Sudamericana de Clubes tournament only ran for one full season, but when the Super Copa Sudamericana had its inaugural season in 1988, it opened up the possibility of a new Super Cup competition. The Super Copa Sudamericana was a tournament contested between previous winners of the Copa Libertadores.

In 1989, the very first edition of the Recopa Sudamericana was held. Uruguayan side Nacional beat Argentina’s Racing Club, winning the tie 4-1 on points after winning the first leg 1-0 and drawing the second 0-0.

While the competition only ever features South American teams, it is often played on other continents. In 1990, Boca Juniors beat Atlético Nacional 1-0 in Miami, while in 1992 and between 1994 and 1997, the Recopa Sudamericana was played in Japan.

At the end of the 1998 season, CONMEBOL ended the Super Copa Sudamericana, leaving the Recopa Sudamericana on hiatus. However, the formation of the Copa Sudamericana in 2002 meant it could return once more, with the 2003 final played in Los Angeles, USA.

Brazilian clubs are the most successful in the competition, with 13 titles compared to Argentina’s 11.

Format & Schedule of Recopa Sudamericana

The Recopa Sudamericana is a two-legged fixture, with each team playing one match at home and one away. The Copa Libertadores champions always host the second leg.

If the aggregate score is level at the end of the second match, 30 minutes of extra time are played. If the scores are still level at the end of extra time, a penalty shootout determines the winner. The away goals rule isn’t applied during the Recopa Sudamericana.

Recopa Sudamericana 2026 Fixtures

In 2026, the Recopa Sudamericana will be played between Brazilian side Flamengo, the winners of the 2025 Copa Libertadores, and Argentine club Lanus, which won the 2025 Copa Sudamericana.

The first leg will be hosted by Lanus and played on February 19, 2026. The second leg will be at Flamengo’s home stadium in Rio de Janeiro on February 26, 2026.
